Utility location will usually combine three aspects. A normal topographic survey will pick up the locations of manholes, metre points and stop valves and may well include diagrams and details of invert levels etc of the entry and exit points in the manhole.

Local authorities and the utility supply companies can provide some information but it may well be necessary to 'chase' the services through using underground location equipment, sometimes with electric traces to help with the location.

The information gathered will normally be shown on a digital version of the topographic survey, or can be provided for input to a LIS (Land Information System)
