Orthophotomaps are digitally corrected aerial images (orthophotographs) and are appropriate when the image content of the photography is as important as the physical position of the detail. The application of laser scanning permits a different approach to fieldwork with fast data collection and adds a significant weapon to our armoury of techniques. The topographical survey, as a digital data-set, can be used as a basis for geographic information systems. All surveys are provided in standard CAD and engineering design system formats. For large sites and communication routes aerial surveying is likely to be more cost effective than the land survey approach. Digital terrain or surface models can be converted into visualisations and supplemented by the representation of natural and man-made features.
